Boston breeders will tell you that there is a lot of demand these days for what are known as “colored” Boston terriers. The American Kennel Club Standards allow for three colors to go with a Boston’s white markings: black, brindle or seal. Black is the Boston’s show standard so if you want to win ribbons, get a black and white Boston terrier. If you don’t plan to show your Boston, the brindle and seal are great colors. Brindle is a distinctive pattern of brown, tan, and black. The AKC defines the color seal as black with a red cast in the sunlight.

The most important thing to remember about the AKC and color is that the AKC allows any dog to be registered as AKC if the parents of that dog are AKC registered. Thus, you can have an AKC Boston of any color if both its parents are AKC registered. With that point in mind, you can consider some of the different views about colored Bostons.
